Release Governance

Engineering governance · Releases · Quality · Organizational change

Early in the Airstage Cloud journey, software releases happened on a cadence much closer to what you might expect from a hardware organization than a cloud product.

The obvious answer—release more often—was not enough. Security, testing, approvals, and quality controls existed for legitimate reasons.

The challenge

The useful question became how to increase software delivery cadence without treating governance as an obstacle to remove.

My role focused on designing and coordinating the governance around that evolution: release readiness, quality gates, testing stages, cross-functional alignment, and approval expectations.

Outcome

Across the broader evolution of the product and organization, release cadence moved from roughly annual deployments, to six-month and quarterly cycles, and eventually to at least monthly software releases.

The lesson I kept: governance and speed do not have to be opposites. Good governance can make frequent delivery safer and more predictable.
